"Education for Democracy in Ukraine"

In March 2000 the Education for Democracy in Ukraine Project, which aims at promoting the democratic political culture, has been launched. The project started in May 2000 with a major conference at the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kyiv.

The central purpose of the project is to facilitate the introduction of education for democracy in Ukrainian schools, more specifically in the secondary school grades 9 - 11.

Supported jointly by the European Union and the United States government, a network of Ukrainian, European and American institutions, and experts work collectively on the implementation of the project. The European part is directed by the Instituut voor Publiek en Politiek (IPP), while the Mershon Center of the Ohio State University supervises the American component. The transatlantic co-ordination is in the hands of the CIVITAS International.

The main objectives of the project are:

• facilitation of the development of the national policy on education for democracy at the secondary level;
• curriculum that describes goals and content for education for democracy in secondary school;
• teaching materials and methodology for education for democracy at secondary school level
• training of teachers and teacher trainers;
• establishment of a network for communication, dissemination of materials and advocacy of education for democracy.
