III. Training of Teachers and Teacher-trainers

The first teacher training workshop took place February 8 - 10, 2001 in Lviv, Ukraine. Ukrainian, European and American experts shared with the participants their expertise about the active teaching methods like co-operative learning, simulation, discussion teaching, and authentic and alternative assessment.

In the coming year training programs in the methodology and didactics of education for democracy will be provided for teachers:

1) In close co-operation with teacher training institutions in different regions of Ukraine, teachers will be trained to use the developed materials. Efforts will be undertaken to provide training possibilities to as many teachers as the budget allows. Here the possibility of co-operation with the Council of Europe directorates is being investigated.

2) Training courses at the teacher-trainers' level are also envisaged. A task group of teacher trainers will develop a teacher training course to be used by the teacher trainers farther on. The course will consider the questions like: how to develop a curriculum for education for democracy; what content should be taught; what didactical and methodological viewpoints are essential; how to create and teach lessons for learning citizenship. In various regions workshops for teacher trainers on how to teach the course will be organised. Here the co-operation with the Canada - Ukraine Democratic Education Project is under consideration.
